Michelle Brook’s poster brings awareness to Hurricane Katrina and the “shortsighted, inadequate preparation and relief efforts” enacted by authorities. In her words, “The relief effort was like a Band-Aid on a hemorrhaging wound, a superficial solution for a much deeper problem”.
Brook’s poster is effective because it uses simple symbols that have a clear correlation to things in the viewer’s mind. The blood stain is in the shape of Louisiana, the state hardest hit with Hurricane Katrina.
